How do I ask my sibling to stop bringing up the past?
Family history comes back at every visit, and each time it starts the same argument. Asking for one thing to stay in the past is easier to hear than a list of what they get wrong.
Tonecraft lets you rehearse it first. Describe what is happening, choose gentle, direct or firm, and walk through six turns. At each turn you see three ways they might answer.
Three ways to open
Gentle
I love seeing you, and I'd like to ask for one thing. Could we leave what happened at Mum's wedding in the past? It turns every visit into the same argument.
Direct
I need you to stop bringing up what happened at Mum's wedding. I want our visits to be about now.
Firm
I won't talk about the wedding again. If it comes up, I'll change the subject or leave.
What to expect
Three ways they might answer. Each is plausible, not a prediction of what they will say.
Hears you out
Fair enough. I didn't realise it got to you that much.
Pushes back
We never actually dealt with it. That's why it keeps coming up.
Brushes it off
You're too sensitive about it.
A message to send after

Rehearse this with your details
Thanks for listening. I meant it: the wedding stays in the past, and I'd like our next visit to be about now.
Your first five rehearsals are free. No card needed.
