How to say no when a friend asks to borrow money

Money between friends is rarely only about money, so a no can sound like a judgement of the friendship. A short, warm answer that does not explain too much is easier to hold.

Tonecraft lets you rehearse it first. Describe what is happening, choose gentle, direct or firm, and walk through six turns. At each turn you see three ways they might answer.

A way to open I've thought about it, and I'm not able to lend you the money. That isn't about how I see you. It's a line I keep with everyone.

Three ways they might answer. Each is plausible, not a prediction of what they will say.

Hears you outOkay. I understand. I'll sort it out another way.
Pushes backI'd do it for you. I thought we were closer than that.
Brushes it offForget I asked.
