How to ask a parent to stop criticizing your choices
A parent's comments often come from worry, and they may not hear them as criticism at all. Naming the topic and what you want instead gives them something they can actually do.
Tonecraft lets you rehearse it first. Describe what is happening, choose gentle, direct or firm, and walk through six turns. At each turn you see three ways they might answer.
A way to open
I know you say it because you worry. I need the comments about my job to stop. If you're concerned about something, ask me, and I'll tell you how it's going.
Three ways they might answer. Each is plausible, not a prediction of what they will say.
Hears you out
I didn't know it bothered you that much. I'll try.
Pushes back
I'm your parent. If I can't say it, who will?
Brushes it off
You've always been sensitive about this.
