How do I tell a friend I can't come to their wedding?
A wedding is a day they will remember who was there. Telling them early, plainly, with how you will mark it, is what keeps the friendship whole.
Tonecraft lets you rehearse it first. Describe what is happening, choose gentle, direct or firm, and walk through six turns. At each turn you see three ways they might answer.
Three ways to open
Gentle
I wanted to tell you as early as I can. I'm not able to come to the wedding, and I'm sorry to miss it. I'd love to take you both out to dinner when you're back.
Direct
I can't come to the wedding. I wanted you to hear it from me now, so you can plan. I'd like to celebrate with you both when you're back.
Firm
I won't be able to come to the wedding. That's settled, and I wanted to tell you early. I'll be thinking of you on the day.
What to expect
Three ways they might answer. Each is plausible, not a prediction of what they will say.
Hears you out
That's a shame, but thank you for telling us early.
Pushes back
It's one weekend. Can't you move things around?
Brushes it off
Fine. We'll manage.
A message to send after
Edit it to fit, then send it yourself
Rehearse this with your details
I meant what I said: I'm sorry to miss it, and I'll be thinking of you both on the day. Dinner is on me when you're back.
