How to tell your manager you won't answer messages after hours

Answering late once becomes the expectation, and it is hard to undo without sounding less committed. Saying when you are reachable, and what to do if something is urgent, keeps it about the work.

Tonecraft lets you rehearse it first. Describe what is happening, choose gentle, direct or firm, and walk through six turns. At each turn you see three ways they might answer.

A way to open I want to set a clear expectation. I'm going to stop answering messages after six and at weekends. I'll reply first thing the next working day. If something is truly urgent, call me.

Three ways they might answer. Each is plausible, not a prediction of what they will say.

Hears you outThat's fair. I'll save non-urgent things for the morning.

Brushes it offSure, no one expects you to answer anyway.
